Vinyl Floor Installation
|
Vinyl flooring has transformed tremendously over the years. Vinyl has gone from a cheap selection for moisture-ridden bathrooms and kitchens to a product that now is seen in some of the most luxurious homes and offices. Vinyl comes in two main forms: sheet goods (generally 12 ft. wide or 6 ft. wide) and vinyl tile. Both these forms offer extensive product lines. Vinyl is still an excellent choice for bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchens, but is no longer limited to the same dull colors and patterns. Many styles today mimic the look of tile, laminate, and wood flooring along with the new creative patterns and benefits of tear resistance and 20+ year manufacturer warranties.
The biggest thing that has not changed about vinyl is the need of precision installation. Vinyl is a product that once it is cut, it is extremely difficult to patch or repair. The initial installation is vital to the life of the vinyl and its installation. Floor prep is also very important when installing vinyl, especially sheet vinyl. Installing the underlayment, when needed, is just as important as installing the vinyl.
Whatever vinyl you select, make sure your installer is prepared to install it correctly and you will not be disappointed!
VCT INSTALLATION
VCT or vinyl composition tile is a very popular selection for commercial applications such as schools, grocery stores, or government buildings. VCT has many products similar to it including Solid Vinyl Tile (SVT) and Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT), but all vary in some form. There are a few lines of residential VCT, but most are named something else (such as LVT) and generally have more home felt patterns and colors. VCT is popular primarily because of its durability and cost efficiency.
VCT has a lot of the same installation guidelines as other hard surfaces such as tile and hardwood. Floor prep and sub-floor moisture content are key to an installation that will last. VCT itself is relatively easy to lay and the difference between a good job and a great job is the life of the install and the speed at which the installer can lay it. Be weary of installer who will quote installation without some sort of site visit or warning about floor prep after old flooring is removed. VCT can easily be installed over imperfections and moisture, but these corner-cutting techniques will show over time. Look to installation professionals who will explain this to you.
